Retainers are needed after active treatment has been completed. They will hold your teeth in their new positions.
We most often fit clear plastic retainers, and you’ll probably wear them for about a year after treatment is completed. They’re so thin and clear, that people don’t usually notice them at all. (except if you take a close-up photo of your mouth, your teeth look shiny)
Some patients have a fixed retainer. This is just a very thin metal wire bonded behind the teeth. It stays in place indefinitely, and will only be seen by your dentist at your routine check-ups, or by a very tall person with a periscope.
